Entries for the 'Calendar' Category

One of the most useful features of SmallWaterSupply.org is our searchable event calendar. There are multiple providers of training in every state, but you want to know what events fit your schedule. With our calendar that boasts thousands of events, you can see what is offered each month at a glance as well as read details about the course materials and cost.

The following video explains exactly how to search for an event in the calendar.

Have you used our calendar? Let us know what you think in the comments.

There are a number of things going on at once here at SmallWaterSupply.org, and as we work toward developing more of the website, as well as adding in important events and documents, we've let our blog slide a little bit.

So What's Going On?

We've done a little updating for the calendar and event search.  Brad already blogged about the new entry form, back on November 9, but I wanted to mention it again.  We hope to provide some of the small, sub-state operator groups with a place to post their events.  We know that there are some groups that don't have webpages, but do put together events for CEU's for the operators in their area.  We will gladly post those and help get the word out.

Something Else That's Helpful.....

Brad also put up a new "View List" box in the event search.  What this button does is allow you to look at your search results in a list form, rather than just looking through the calendar month to month.  It's really handy for our staff, as we enter new events, we can search by sponsor and list all of the events that we already have listed.  It's also really handy if you have filtered your search down so much that nothing shows up in the current month.  If that happens, click on the "view list" box and it will list all of the search results.  It will be a real time saver and save you from being really annoyed, clicking from month to month to month trying to find the events you are looking for when it might not be available until 6 months down the road.

So, try those things out, let us know what you think.  Feedback from our users is the key to making the website function better for you.

I Almost Forgot......

The "view list" box won't appear until you have used the 1st filter, and you are better off narrowing your search to a single organization, or category and state, or your list could be pretty long.  The list is in date order, so scrolling though is pretty simple.  Here's what it looks like for Kansas-Wastewater Treatment.  You can see by the scroll bar on the right side, there are alot of events that meet these two filter criteria.  From the list, you can click on an event title to get the details, just like you would from the calendar.

Our staff is constantly searching the web looking for water supply related events to include in our database of events.  While this process insures that most of the water supply related events occurring around the country can be found using our calendar event search page, there are certainly some events that are never listed anywhere on the internet to begin with.  And, while our staff is top-notch, it is also nearly impossible to keep our database completely current with all of the event schedules that exist out there.  In order to try and incorporate any of these missed events, we have added a new Events Submission page to our site.

This new page will allow any user to easily provide our staff with all of the information necessary to add an event to our database.   Simply fill out the form provided, and click on the ‘Submit Event’ button.  If you place your mouse cursor over any of the field names, a description of what information is needed for that field will pop up.  Once the information for your event has been submitted, our staff will review it, and add it to the database as soon as possible.  Hopefully, this will help insure that as many of the water supply related events occurring across the country as possible will be included in our searchable database, making it easier for operators find the information they need.

We've Added To Our Site

Today we've opened up our site to include a new home page (Our blog was our home page), a searchable calendar, and a searchable database of online documents. Please take a look, send us any comments you have, and be sure to share our URL with other operators, TA providers, and those who are invoved with small water supplies in some way.

Using Our Site

Please give the calendar and document search a try.  What you will find is that we have included information from every type of organization imaginable (almost) and in each case, there are links back to the original information, as well as the organization hosting the document or event.  Check out the video tutorial, for a quick tour.

Working For Operators

Lately, have you looked on the web for documents on a particular topic or from a specific state, trying to find just one item or fact that you need?  The explosion of the  internet is making that harder and harder to do because so many websites have related information that show up in searches.

Our goal is to help small water supply operators.  What's the best thing for them?  We know they have little time to use the internet, we know they struggle to stay ahead of their responsibilities, so the best thing for them is to have access to information in an easy to find, and easy to understand form.  That's what we are trying to provide.  We are putting everything we can find in one place so the operator doesn't have to spend the time trying to look through several web pages to find what they need.  We are trying to do that for them. We've done the legwork for them.

Playing No Favorites

If an organization has free resources or does state approved training that benefits small water supply operators, we plan to put it on our website. SmallWaterSupply.org doesn't host documents and doesn't do training, we give operators quick and easy access to everyone else's documents and training, sending them directly to the source. We are helping operators get to the resources these organizations have.

Missing Links

Some of the links we plan to include on the home page are still under construction.  We decided to include them, though not currently linkable, just to let you know what we are planning for the short term.  We are creating more video tutorials to help explain the document and event search.  Believe it or not, there are some tips that will help you streamline the way you use these features.

The Quick Links give you an idea of the things we are working on too.  We plan to have a page listing the online training available around the country, and we are developing a contact list for TA providers that work with tribal water systems.  Our email list is informal at the moment, but eventually, anyone will be able to sign up via that link.  So stay tuned.  We felt that our site already has benefit for operators, so we decided to go ahead and launch what we have.  But, we are committed to adding more features, and working with the industry to continue to improve what resources we can offer.

Thanks for visiting our site.
